In 2016 and 2017, Diana Widmaier-Picasso curated two exhibitions for Gagosian: the first gathered works from the collection of her mother, Maya Ruiz-Picasso, Pablo Picasso's beloved eldest daughter; and the second commemorated the relationship between Picasso and Maya. More than just a catalog of these two exhibitions, this book is a comprehensive reference publication that explores the figure of Maya throughout Picasso's work and chronicles the relationship between the artist and his daughter. The volume features an intimate interview between Ruiz-Picasso and Widmaier-Picasso, along with archival photographs by Edward Quinn and from the Picasso family, many of which have never been published before. New scholarly essays complete the publication, with contributions by distinguished Picasso scholars such as Elizabeth Cowling, Carmen Giménez, and Pepe Karmel. A section of the book is devoted to Picasso's plaster sculpture La Femme Enceinte (1959) and includes a discussion of Roe Ethridge's vivid, specially commissioned photographs of this work.

Without a doubt, Picasso is one of the most important and versatile artistic personalities of the twentieth century. But how does a body of work become so successful, and how does it wind up in major collections, museums, and exhibitions? Not infrequently, it is the courage of individuals who recognize genius in the works and advocate for them in the face of conservatism and criticism. An ingenious approach to personal portraiture in a country with a virtual embargo on the formWhile undertaking this photographic investigation of North Korea, French photographer Stéphan Gladieu (born 1969) found himself under constant surveillance everywhere he went. Because of these constraints, he managed to invent an ingenious space of freedom. Gladieu created mirror-portraits of people he encountered and was hosted by, often full length, which require a face-on pose and a direct gaze. In this way, he managed to create a form similar to North Korea's propaganda imagery, which made his approach more comprehensible and permissible to the authorities.Fifty years after its foundation, North Korea endures a media portrayal of war, famine, nuclear programs and military parades. Indoors, people are required to display portraits of the regime's founder, Kim Il-sung and his son Kim Jong-Il. Family photos are not allowed; nor are personal portraits. Consequently, Gladieu's work attains an almost historic act of intervention in the country's visual politics.
