Par cette farce enorme, Rabelais lutte avec humour contre un certain obscurantisme du Moyen Age. Manger du lard en Careme avait conduit Marot en prison. Rabelais, en humaniste, s'interessait a tout : medecine, philosophie, education, geographie. Sa verve, sa truculence et sa fantaisie sont restees inegalees. Et il y a aujourd'hui dans le monde autant d'intolerants et d'ignorants qu'en son epoque pour que son livre fasse toujours rire.

The dazzling and exuberant moral stories of Rabelais (c. 1471-1553) expose human follies with their mischievous and often obscene humour, while intertwining the realistic with carnivalesque fantasy to make us look afresh at the world.
