Lemuel Gulliver, ship's surgeon and castaway, has awoken in Lilliput, where the size of the tiny inhabitants makes their concerns and quarrels seem ridiculous. A second journey takes him to the kingdom of giants, where again his size gives him new insights into human behaviour. Then, after he is cast adrift by pirates, Gulliver visits a series of islands where learning is misdirected and immortality is only misery. Gulliver's final voyage brings him to the land of the Houyhnhnms, horses with reason, who share their domain with the brutish Yahoos. He returns to England a changed man. Swift's corrosive satire embraces all aspects of humanity. It is witty when dealing with foibles and frailty, bitterly angry when facing pride and stupidity, but compassionate and unsentimental when focused upon suffering.

In the course of his famous travels, Gulliver is captured by miniature people who wage war on each other because of religious disagreement over how to crack eggs, is sexually assaulted by giants, visits a floating island, and decides that the society of horses is better than that of his fellow man. Swift's tough, filthy and incisive satire has much to say about the state of the world today and is presented here in its unexpurgated entirety.

It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature.

Jonathan Swift's classic satirical narrative was first published in 1726, seven years after Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (one of its few rivals in fame and breadth of appeal). As a parody travel-memoir it reports on extraordinary lands and societies, whose names have entered the English language: notably the minute inhabitants of Lilliput, the giants of Brobdingnag, and the Yahoos in Ilouyhnhnmland, where talking horses are the dominant species. It spares no vested interest from its irreverent wit, and its attack on political and financial corruption, as well as abuses in science, continue to resonate in our own times.

His subsequent encounters - with the crude giants of Brobdingnag, the philosophical Houyhnhnms and the brutish Yahoos -give Gulliver new, bitter insights into human behavior. But this is only the first in a long line of wonderful discoveries, as his adventures take him to other far-off lands such as Brobdingnag, populated by a race of giants, Luggnagg, home to the eternally ageing Struldbrugs, and the country of the Houyhnhnms, a race of benevolent talking horses. Parodying the popular travel accounts of its time, Gulliver's Travels is not only a tour de force of imaginative and comic writing, which has thrilled readers of all ages for almost three centuries, but also a masterly, merciless satire on Western society and human nature.

Jonathan Swift's entry into the world, on 30 November 1667 at Dublin, was not an easy one. Seven months before the author's birth, his father died, leaving an English wife lacking in income. As a boy, Swift was taken under the wing of a wealthy uncle, who paid for his education. He attended Trinity College in Dublin and Oxford, and was later ordained as an Anglican priest. Swift remained in England, becoming active in politics, and developed a reputation as a great satirist. His first major work, A Tale of a Tub (1704), an irreverent take on religious excess, was followed by The Battle of the Books (1704) and a 1711 pamphlet attacking the Whig government. Swift's political activities had an adverse effect on his livelihood, and in 1713, he returned to Ireland. There he produced his finest writing, including Gulliver's Travels. Presented as the work of Lemuel Gulliver, an adventurer, this unique blending of satire and parody was originally published under the title Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World (1726). The novel was followed by A Modest Proposal (1729), in which it is famously argued that the poor might do well in selling their children as food for the rich. Swift's final decade was marred by poor health; he produced little and died on 19 October 1745. Herbert Cole (1867-1930) was an English portraitist and book illustrator. Cole's illustrations for Gulliver's Travels first appeared in a 1900 edition published by J. M. Dent.
